The catastrophe

Rogue black hole โ€” gravitational anomalies destroy cities

It cannot be seen, only measured โ€” a wandering mass bending the planet as it passes. Tides go wrong, fault lines wake up, cities fold. The physicists say it will drift on eventually. They do not say when.

The shelter: Chicken coop (three hens, one temperamental) ยท no coffee at all ยท 3 / 8

How to play from these cards

  1. 1. Read the catastrophe out loudIt decides which skills are worth anything: after a nuclear winter an agronomist beats a marketer, and after a pandemic the doctor matters more than either.
  2. 2. Deal one dossier per personEveryone sees only their own. Print one per sheet or fold them in half โ€” what matters is that your neighbour cannot read it.
  3. 3. Open one trait per roundEveryone reveals their profession, then their health, and so on. The tension is entirely in the fact that it comes out one card at a time.
  4. 4. Vote on who stays outsideAt the end of each round the table votes somebody out. Repeat until exactly as many people remain as there are places.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Completely. No sign-up and no limit on how many sets you generate.

How many players do you need?

Between 4 and 16. Eight to twelve is best: enough people for a real argument, and few enough places that they are worth fighting over.

How many places should the shelter have?

Usually half the players or slightly fewer. For eight people, three or four โ€” then the argument is serious from the first round.

Can I print it?

Yes โ€” the print button lays the dossiers out for paper, one card per block and nothing else on the page.

What if I draw a useless set?

Nothing โ€” that is the game. Convincing the table that an asthmatic with a record collection belongs underground is more interesting than drawing the doctor.
